Welcome to the Senior Citizens Forum!
The Forum is a small charity with a membership of around 2220 older people in Telford & Wrekin. It promotes opportunities for older people to have a say and influence decision making, and to access information about services, activities, and volunteering opportunities.
The Forum sets out to establish links and working partnerships with Telford & Wrekin Council, the NHS, other charities, agencies and organisations to help further its objectives.
Please browse our site for more information and if you would like to join us or enquire or comment about any issues raised on our site, please CONTACT US.
The Forum is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, run by a board of trustees and supported by two part time employees. Membership is free and open to people normally resident in Telford & Wrekin, who are generally but not exclusively over the age of 55, also to their carers, or those who have an interest or involvement with older people.
The Forum holds regular events including coffee mornings, social events and six open forums a year which feature speakers on a variety of key topics to encourage audience involvement. Local organisations are also represented with display stands.
Every two months a free full colour magazine is produced, partly financed through advertising, which is sent to the membership and also to several venues and organisations throughout the area. It includes articles, many provided by other groups and organisations, on current local and national issues, and gives details about activities, leisure pursuits, events and opportunities for volunteering. The Forum’s website provides useful information about current issues and local events for older people, and along with Facebook and Twitter, gives older people an opportunity to access information. The Forum has produced information directories in collaboration with the local council, signposting older people to essential services.
The Forum’s Action groups (Health & Social Care, and Environment & Transport), carry out research and take up issues on behalf of members. The Computer Project offers computer tutoring to help people get online and involves older people volunteering to teach other older people computer skills, at home for the housebound and less mobile, to whom the Forum loans laptops, and at four weekly computer drop in sessions. This is aimed at helping older people access information, keep in touch and feel less isolated.
Members are provided where possible with opportunities to volunteer and also to take part in consultation exercises carried out by the local authority and other organisations, and the Forum sends a representative to sit on a number of boards and working groups.
In August 2015 the Forum was delighted to be awarded a Big Lottery Grant which will fund some of the Forum’s existing activities such as our magazine, our open forum events and computer tuition and a new project aimed at those with long term conditions and dementia. The Big Lottery project will start on October 1st 2015.
